How to make Gnocchi 101

Last week my cousin Hannah came for a visit (she’s still here though), along with her friend Andrew who’s an Au Pair (nanny) in Austria for the year. They quickly made friends with the sweet Italian family that I live next too, and Antonio, who everyone calls “Toto,” and his dad, Peppe, wanted to teach us how to make their special Ragu sauce and gnocchi.

Gnocchi is a traditional Italian potato-based pasta, and it’s excellent. It took forever to make it though, because we kept messing up, and Toto and Peppe kept yelling at us. It was one of the best nights I’ve had here. We started making it at 6 p.m. and didn’t eat until 8:30 p.m. Dinner was an experience all on its own. Lots of yelling and eating, then more yelling and eating, laughing, joking, eating, yelling, oh and did I mention eating?

You would not believe the amount of food these people consume. And they never eat dinner before 8 or 9 p.m. It’s crazy. But oh so fun. Check out the videos:

Peppe is such a pest. I love him so much :) Funny little old man.

Metro Breakdown

So, the other day, on our way to language school the Metro randomly broke down. I had my headphones in, so all I caught was them saying something about electrical problems.

We were two stops from our destination (Piazza Dante), and everybody else on the train was leaving, so we figured we’d just try to walk it. I asked a lady at a corner store for directions, and she pointed us down this one street.

Here are the pictures:

The trek to language school begins!

Cool street on our journey to find language school.

Just really cool.

Here’s the video:

Then, we hit an intersection and I asked a cop where to go, and he pointed us down another street. Then we came to the museum and I wanted a picture, to put on this blog, shown here:

Metro broke down at Materdei. This is one stop later at Museo. Only one stop to go: Dante

As I was taking this picture, there were three old guys at a guard station and one started talking to me and wanted to buy us coffee and get my phone number. He insisted on walking us part of the way to Dante. Here’s the video:

And we finally arrive:

Piazza Dante! Finally something we recognize!

Prayer Requests

My team's prayer requests for this week.

I know the words are really small and hard to read in this picture, so here’s the link to the PDF:

Pizza Pasta Prayer

A good day. A new friend. A solid conversation.

So, I made a new friend today at language school. Which was cool. We ended up hanging out all afternoon and going for an hour long run this evening. It was really great, actually.

You see, I’m in language school for 4 hours a day, Monday – Friday (lunedi – venerdi). I started off in the advanced class because I had an interview in Italian with one of the teachers and she thought I could handle it. Turns out I couldn’t. Ha ha. So they meant to move me down to the intermediate class, but the rooms got switched and I was in the beginner class. Finally they put me in the intermediate one though, which is right where I belong.

While in class we do all kinds of different exercises. We do some stuff out of a book, but primarily, we just talk. The teachers ask us questions, like what we did yesterday, what we plan on doing tomorrow, where we’re going to spend the holidays – anything to get us to use different grammatical structures, like past, present and future verb tenses, etc.

Sometimes they give us letters written in Italian, and we have to respond in Italian. Sometimes we write short essays about this that or the other, and sometimes we watch Italian movies and talk about what’s going on, describe the characters and analyze the plot. And today, our teacher had us pair off with another student and tell them what we were going to do for Christmas, then each would share with the class what the other had said.

So I got paired with this guy, and I started describing my Christmas plans and he started asking me all about the holiday and we started getting into a spiritual conversation, so much so that he didn’t get to tell me his plans, so I had nothing to share with the class when my turn came. But that didn’t matter so much. The teacher finally made us stop talking and told us to finish during the break. So, after 2 hours we get a break, and we continued our conversation during the break.

He’s a really nice guy, really intellectual guy and had a ton of questions about my faith. – Oh, FYI, the teacher is good friends with my supervisor, so she knew already that I’m an M over here and yesterday when I came to this new class, she asked everyone if they were curious why I was in Naples, and of course they were, so I explained all that to the class. So they all know that I’m a follower of Christ and that my work is to do ministry with university students. – So I laid it all out for him. I mean, everything, started sharing from the beginning. I can’t even think of all that we discussed today. Basically, everything you could ever want to know about Christianity and comparing it to Catholicism and Judaism (he’s Jewish, but not practicing).

Our break was only 20 minutes, so we didn’t have time to talk about all that in class, but after class I told him I’d love to grab a coffee sometime and talk more, and hear his perspective, what he believes and what not. And he was like, “Well, how ’bout now? What are you doing this afternoon?” I didn’t have any set plans, I had planned to go to my teammate Emily’s apartment and use internet and then change and go for a run in the park near her apartment. But there was no way I could pass this opportunity up. So I said sure thing and told Cortney.

We talked as we walked to a kebab shop and ate lunch, then we kept walking and talking about all kinds of stuff. I mean, we talked about what it means to walk by the spirit, about the Trinity, about faith vs. works, about Jesus’ first and second comings, about the significance of religious holidays, about morality, about marriage and the different roles of men and women in a marriage, about why I believe in abstinence (which he told me he thought was insane) and so so much more. My goodness, my head was spinning when we finally parted ways tonight.

Since I had told the class that I planned on going for a run this afternoon (as part of an exercise), he suggested we go for a run. Oh my word, it was intense. He used to be in the military, so he’s a serious runner, and I told him I was super out of shape, but oh my gosh!!! 20 minutes UP HILL!!! I had to stop and walk at one point, couldn’t do it. Then we ran another 40 minutes around a wonderful, huge park at the top of the moutainside essentially, overlooking the whole city, and back down hill, thank goodness. But it was a good run.

Now, I’m not usually a talker when I run. You can just ask my dad, because we run together alot. I get so out of breath, there’s no way I can carry on a conversation! Well, today, by the grace of God, I did. Halfway through the run, we picked right back up with our spiritual conversation.

It was incredible. The whole conversation was in English, because he’s American, but his family moved to Israel when he was eight, and he’s traveled alot. But man, it was really good. He doesn’t agree with much of anything I said, but he seems to be seeking truth. He thinks everyone should investigate every religion and fully understand all of it before they make a decision about their beliefs, so he knows alot about many of the world’s religions, but he doesn’t really know what he believes.

He’s a nice guy, and I’m sure we’ll go for some more runs in the days to come, and I’m sure we’ll have many more conversations about our beliefs, which is exciting. Be praying for our conversations and our friendship. I’m excited to see what Father does with this.

Language School

I love my life

I recorded this on Sunday (Nov. 1), but it wouldn’t upload properly until today. Sorry I haven’t had any posts in a while, but here’s my new home. For the next few months we’ll be living here with a Neapolitan family that’s good friends with our supervisor. This way we can learn the language, culture and cuisine from the natives. Plus, they’re awesome :)

(We have our own apartment, so we don’t actually live with this family, but we share the courtyard with them and they stop by all the time. Assunta’s mother lived here before us. She actually died IN the apartment, which kinda creeps Cortney out, but I don’t really have a problem with it. Ha ha)

We’ll move to the historic city center after a month or two in order to be closer to the university we’ll be ministering to.

Check it yo.

Buon Compleanno Hannah!

So, this video was supposed to be posted on Wed. November 4th, for my cousin Hannah’s birthday, but my movie file was way too large and I couldn’t figure out how to compress it until just today. Sorry Hannah, I tried. Oh well, better late than never.

So, everyone meet my Italian family! From left to right, it’s Assunta, her son Antonio, and her husband Pepe. pepe might be my favorite. I love this family so much. They always invite us over for dinner or birthday parties, and if they don’t have us over they’ll just stop by and say hey or bring us tea when we’re sick. They’re fantastic. I love them.

My next post will have a video showing where they live, along with the rest of the family. Enjoy:

So, I don’t know if you guys realize this or not, but there’s not really a whole lot to do in Greenville. Now don’t get me wrong, I only have love for my hometown, it’s just not the most exciting place on earth.

Being back in town this past month before leaving for Italy has been really great, but let’s face it, there’s only so much I can take of my beloved hometown right now. So what have I been doing? Well, I’ve pretty much camped out at Starbucks for a few hours a day, nearly every day.

Borderline pathetic, I know, I catch enough grief about all the time I spend up there from Brandon, one of the workers there who seems to think I need to get a life. Ha ha. He’s probably right. Although, quite a few times I’ve met people up at Starbucks to hang out and catch up and what not, so that should score me some social points :)

But actually, I’ve really enjoyed my daily outings to Starbucks. I don’t like Starbucks that much, its stores are cold – both aesthetically and literally (I freeze in there every time I go!), and their coffee is really not that good. But I fell in love with coffee shops in Austin and seem to get my best work done in them. I don’t know why, but I can’t ever seem to focus in my place of dwelling. I get distracted way too easily – one annoying thing about Starbucks, that actually turned out to be a good thing: no Internet. At least there’re fewer distractions that way.

You see lately I’ve been having discipline issues, and the best way for me to ensure I spend time in prayer, journaling and Bible study is if I make a little event of it, and coffee shops provide great atmospheres for work, study and generally being productive. So that’s where I’ve been. And man, it’s been really cool how the Lord has been using those times to give me a picture of what my life could be like in a few weeks over in Italy.

In America, we often will go to a coffee shop with a purpose in mind, either we’re meeting someone or we’re studying, working, reading, that sort of thing. We pretty well keep to ourselves and don’t really engage anyone we weren’t planning on engaging, you know? But see, in Italy, I’ve heard it’s the norm for people to go and hang out at coffee shops and actually meet random people and strike up conversations with strangers, possibly forming relationships from those interactions.

Well, the past few weeks, I’ve met so many random people and shared some really encouraging conversations with them! First, I was reading a book about Naples and began talking with three professors from Howard Payne that were sitting next to me. They asked what I was reading and that got us talking about me moving to Naples and going through the Journeyman program and then they shared how they knew former students and such who were Jmen as well. We talked a bit and I gave them each a prayercard. It was really cool. So random.

Then, I bumped into an old friend, not even friend really, but an acquaintance, a girl I really like a lot. And in a situation where I could have said, “Hey, how are you?” and left it at that, I felt the Lord telling me to dig a little deeper, as long as she was willing to talk. Where I could have, and often tend to, ended the conversation before it started so that I could get my work done, we actually ended up talking for nearly two hours! What an encouragement she was to me, and the Lord gave me some opportunities to speak truth into her life and encourage her as well. Incredible.

Another day I met a career counselor who inquired about what I was reading (Matt 4) and I was able to share with her what the Lord had been teaching me lately. Then she shared with me one of her favorite passages out of Malachi, and we talked for a while until her appointment showed up. It was so cool.  On a separate occasion a guy asked me what on earth I was writing about – I’d been journaling for an hour and a half – and I started sharing with him what the Lord has been doing in my life. So that lead to talk of Italy and all kinds of good stuff.

It’s been so great to catch even a small glimpse of what things could be like in Naples. Each encounter was clearly from the Lord, and on each occasion he gave me words to say and boldness to say them. I can already see how He’s working all this for His glory, preparing me for what is yet to come. And I can’t wait! I love it.
